Systematic synthetic phonics
In Early Years (Acorn) and KS1 (Beech) we base our teaching of phonics on the Jolly Phonics & Jolly Grammar schemes of work. This approach to teaches letter/phoneme recognition, decoding, encoding and early punctuation and grammar.
After the initial introduction to the first 44 phonemes (sounds), the children are flexibly grouped based on their learning needs within their class. Use of this scheme continues into Key Stage Two for some of our children, where it is assessed that this will support their learning appropriately.
