Curriculum intent for Science
Our Science curriculum provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Pupils are taught the essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science and how its impact has changed and informed our history and lives and continues to do so. Through developing an awareness and understanding of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils are supported to develop an appropriate scientific approach understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.  Our practical curriculum approach fosters a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
In line with the national curriculum, our school curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
As well as being able to describe associated processes and key characteristics in common language, pupils are also taught to understand and use technical terminology accurately and precisely, building an extended specialist vocabulary as they progress through the school.
They have planned opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data.

  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them, including:
    • observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources
    • seeking answers to questions through collecting, analysing and presenting data

  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
Implementation
The value that we place on Science as a core subject is reflected in our timetable with a weekly Science morning across the school when children have an opportunity to become immersed in science and work in practical, investigative ways.   Much of our science curriculum is mapped through our thematic topics where there are meaningful links to learning in other curriculum areas.  This is not always appropriate and so our curriculum map includes blocks of learning in science that are taught discretely, ensuring that through a clear progression in learning content, pupils cover all aspects of the National Curriculum during their time with us.
With a focus on working scientifically, our pupils organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following learning themes:
Biology:
  • Understand plants
  • Understand animals and humans
  • Investigate living things
  • Understand evolution and inheritance
Chemistry:
  • Investigate materials
Physics:
  • Understand movement, forces and magnets
  • Understand the Earth’s movement in space
  • Investigate light and seeing
  • Investigate sound and hearing
  • Understand electrical circuits
The structure of our curriculum enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.
